Rachael Marie Sloat: Unbowed

July 14th- August 5th

A mixed media artist from Boothbay, Maine, Sloat combines translucent color washes and dramatic mark making to investigate natural structures.

"Unbowed is inspired by a line from the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley, and refers to one’s ability to withstand extreme pressure and circumstances. Nature has a beautiful way of reminding us of the paradox of how complex structures have the ability to brave intense conditions and remain strong. This is also true of the human condition. Through intense line, texture, and high contrast, these drawings serve to represent the parallel between nature and the human spirit. My hope is that they inspire the viewer to think about his own ability to withstand extreme circumstances. Whether it is grief, illness, stress, or other forces, we were designed to rise and remain unbowed." -Sloat

Each piece is a combination of ink, charcoal, and graphite on paper. The larger suspended panels are a site specific work.
